There once was a town named Earville filled with lots of Ears. They were a joyful, talkative and boisterous sort and thus the phrase was coined, “Boy, did I get an Ear-ful!” The Ears were bustling and exceedingly happy this time of year as the holidays were coming and they would again be able to enjoy all the wonderful holiday sounds - the music, the ceremony, the caroling, the bells, EVEN THE ADVERTISING!
Unfortunately, in this very same Earville, lived a Grinch who just HATED sound! He hated sound so bad that he once put two slugs in his ears to block out “the noise” and the term “earslug” eventually came to mean “earplug.” The Grinch of Earville turned a blind ear to everything beautiful and harmonious about the holiday season. “Why spend time worrying about sound?”, said the Grinch, “Can’t you SEE what’s going on? Who needs that racket?”
That’s when the Grinch hatched his Grinch-like plan to steal all the holiday sounds! He would quietly (of course) sneak through the night grabbing and nabbing, snatching and scratching, thrashing and smashing all the music, instruments and sound sources for everything that said , “Happy Holidays!” And, at midnight, when he heard nothing but the whistling winter wind, he felt so motivated, so invigorated that he spent the rest of the evening stealing all the rest of the sound!
The next day, all the poor little Ears were horribly shaken – Gone were the sounds of the season from the streets, from the radio, from the TV! “Our beautiful sound is gone!” So the Head Ears called a town meeting. “Whose idea was it to leave out the sound?” asked the Mayor of Earville of the worried Earfolk. For the only time in Earville history, everyone was silent for a moment that seemed eternal. But Little Cindy Loo Ear spoke up, “Maybe it was that mean old Grinch! He thinks sound is just so much noise!”
Well, you’ll never guess what happened next. As the Grinch snuck into Earville to see why all the Ears were gathered in such numbers, a car came barreling around a corner, heading straight for the Grinch! But since he had stolen the sound, the Grinch couldn’t hear the car coming! Only Little Cindy Loo Ear could see the impending disaster and hesitated only for a moment before she yelled a warning to the Grinch that saved his life.
The Grinch was so visibly shaken and thankful for Cindy Loo’s warning that he immediately returned ALL the sound to the rightful places. He became a new Grinch, a sound aficionado Grinch! Now he enjoyed the “Sounds of the Season” everywhere he went! And he knew WHERE he could buy that wonderful telephone-gizmo, computer-it, or music-blat. He blissfully enjoyed the season spending $$ as he said “Merry Christmas to all, and to all a beautiful sound.”
The moral: Beware of Grinch’s who turn a deaf ear; they could wind up being your best customer.
