I’ve always been musically-oriented from a young age. I started playing the piano at age 5 and studied seriously for several years. My focus changed to singing and acting after my first church musical at the age of 10. In high school, I became a TMEA All-State Choir Member for 2 years running while also performing in several musicals and pop groups. I received a vocal performance scholarship to attend Southwest Texas State (now Texas State University). I studied classical voice for 3 years with the hopes of going onto the bright lights of Broadway, but then I met someone and everything changed once again.
My focus changed to sound recording as I thought it would be a bit more stable career than the Broadway life. Luckily, Southwest Texas was starting a sound recording technology (SRT) program that I was able to pickup in my junior year. During high school, I had always helped run sound at the concerts. Now, I actually got to work in a commercial recording studio environment with the likes of the Texas Tornados and Chief Engineer, Bobby Arnold, who cut his teeth recording Willie Nelson. I was in the first class to graduate from the SRT program at Southwest!
When it came time for me to do my senior internship, the whole SRT class was sitting in the control room when our advisor came in and said that Sound Works in Houston was offering an internship. Everyone asked, “What was Sound Works”? The advisor informed us that Sound Works was an audio post facility - Everyone just sat there. All my classmates wanted work at a “Music” studio instead of an “Audio Post House”, which I thought was crazy! I raised my hand and said, “I’ll do it!” Well, that was over 12 years ago and I’m still here at Sound Works. FYI - only a couple of my classmates are still even in the audio business.
And that someone who changed my career in my junior year… Her name is Crystal and we’ve been married for 12 years and have 2 beautiful children, Jack and Meredith.
